Each month, the total of all delivery fees is presented to an individual, family or organization in our community, with hope of offering support in a time of need. Buy Nothing Day Coat Exchange
For more than 25 years, the Buy Nothing Day Coat Exchange has provided coats and warm winter gear to thousands of Rhode Islanders in need on the day after Thanksgiving. For many, that is Black Friday, a day full of shopping. For this organization, it’s Buy Nothing Day. With the help of volunteers, donated coats and warm winter gear are distributed to community members in need or to Buy Nothing Day Coat Exchange’s trusted partner organizations with direct ties to folks in need. This annual event takes place on the lawn of the State House and will be on Friday, November 27, 2026.
Buy Nothing Day Coat Exchange collects clean, gently used or new winter coats, scarves, gloves/mittens, winter hats, sweatshirts/sweaters in adult and children’s sizes, for all ages and genders from September through the week before Thanksgiving for distribution on Buy Nothing Day.
Buy Nothing Day Coat Exchange also hosts an annual sock and underwear drive from January through April. Distribution happens on a rolling basis during collection for people who are experiencing homelessness or living in shelters. Donations of new, unopened packages of socks (the taller and thicker, the better) and underwear for adults and children of all sizes, ages, and genders are accepted and appreciated.
As a fully-volunteer organization, Buy Nothing Day Coat Exchange relies on the support of the community to help them continue this work. In addition to donations of coats, winter gear and socks/underwear, monetary donations are deeply appreciated and help them cover other necessary expenses to keep their efforts going.
Join us as we contribute to Buy Nothing Day Coat Exchange so they can continue to provide neighbors in
need with warm coats, winter gear, and socks/underwear, fulfilling their mission to make sure everyone
has the items required for basic dignity. For more specific information, please visit www.ricoatexchange.org.
